Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of social skills- specific group art therapy on social skills and adjustment to school settings among high school students with intellectual disabilities. Subjects included 10 high school students with intellectual disabilities (5 in an experimental group, 5 in a control group). The program included 50-minute sessions conducted two times per week for a total of 7 weeks; 14 sessions total. Research instruments included the Social Skill Rating System (SSRS) and the School Adjustment Scale. The data were analyzed using the mixed analysis method. Quantitative analysis was derived using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and qualitative measurements were based on the Transtheoretical Model. Results are as follows: First, SSRS scores significantly increased from post-test to pre-test. Qualitative changes were progressive as well; in later stages, participants were able to express thoughts and feelings using more diverse and rich methods, compromise with friends in appropriate ways, and problem solve collectively with their peers. Second, the post-test scores of the school adjustment scale were significantly increased than the pre-test. Qualitatively, in later stages, participants were able to form positive relationships by expressing positive thoughts and emotions towards their teachers and friends. In addition, problem solving, attention during class, and compliance with indoor rules/expectations improved throughout participation. These results suggest that social skills group art therapy is effective in improving social skills and adaptation to school among high school students with intellectual disabilities.
